Former FC Porto centre-back Jorge Costa, who became a coach in 2006, died on Tuesday at the age of 53, according to te club’s media officer.
According to several Portuguese media outlets, Costa died following a heart attack.
During his playing career, he won the 2004 Champions League—under José Mourinho—as well as a UEFA Cup and eight Portuguese league titles with his beloved club, Porto.
After his coaching career, during which he briefly managed French club Tours (five matches), he returned to Porto in 2024, where he held the position of Director of Football.
The former Dragons captain played nearly 400 matches for Porto and wore the Portugal jersey 50 times, including at Euro 2000 and the 2002 World Cup.
After hanging up his boots in 2006, he managed numerous teams in his native country (Braga, Olhanense, etc.) but also in Romania, Cyprus and India (Mumbai City).
