France international Lassana Diarra has filed a lawsuit against FIFA, seeking €65 million in damages following the European Court of Justice’s (CJEU) ruling that FIFA’s transfer rules were illegal.

On October 4, 2024, the European Court ruled that certain FIFA transfer rules violated EU principles regarding the free movement of workers and competition law. It recognised that the transfer system prevented players from exercising their right to terminate employment contracts without just cause, even though this right was, in principle, recognised in the rules.

The decision impacts all players who have signed a professional contract in Europe since 2002.

Following the ruling, Diarra is seeking €65 million in damages from FIFA.

An independent analysis was conducted to confirm the damages suffered by Diarra during his career due to the rules, which have been deemed illegal.

“I have been forced to fight this legal battle since August 2014. That’s over 11 years,” Diarra said in a statement.

“I am forced to relaunch the proceedings in order to obtain, in accordance with the verdict of the CJEU of 4 October 2024, compensation for the damage caused by these rules.

“I’m not doing it just for myself, but also for all the lesser-known players who don’t have the financial and psychological means to challenge FIFA,” the French midfielder said.

Early August, the Netherlands-based Justice for Players union filed a lawsuit against FIFA seeking compensation for the more than 100,000 professional players who allegedly played during this period.

The Belgian firm, Dupont-Hissel, representing Diarra claims FIFA is not cooperating.

This case stems from Diarra’s conflict with his then club, Lokomotiv Moscow, in 2014. Due to a drastic reduction in his salary, Diarra left the Moscow-based side, who deemed the player’s departure abusive, and demanded €20 million from him, which was later reduced to €10.5 million.

Diarra is supported by the international (FIFPRO), European (FIFPRO Europe) and French (UNFP) players’ unions.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has denounced “unacceptable” racist insults that occurred recently during two matches in the German Cup.

He has called on competition organisers and judicial authorities to take action while reiterating that racism has “no place” in football.

The first incident took place during a German Cup round of 32 match between Lokomotive Leipzig (D4) and Schalke 04 (D2), when Schalke striker Christopher Antwi-Adjei became a victim of racial insults.

The Ghanaian international reported the incident to the linesman, and the match was interrupted for five minutes.

The second incident occurred at the Karl-Liebknecht-Stadion in Potsdam (eastern Germany), between Stahnsdorf (D5) and Kaiserslautern (D2), which was also marked by racist insults against a player from the opposing team.

“It is appalling to see that for the second time in recent days, racist insults have taken place during football matches,” Infantino said in an email from FIFA to German media.

“I repeat myself and will continue to do so: there is no place for racism or any other form of discrimination in football. We are committed to ensuring that players are respected and protected,” Infantino said.

The German Football Association, which organises the Cup competitions, said the “control committee is examining the incidents and is initiating investigations against the respective clubs.”

Last weekend, a man was arrested in England in connection with racist insults directed towards Bournemouth’s Ghanaian player, Antoine Semenyo, during the Premier League season opening game against Liverpool.

According to the report, a 47-year-old unnamed man was taken into custody on suspicion of a racially motivated public order offense.

Shortly before the half-hour mark, Bournemouth‘s Ghanaian winger Antoine Semenyo, who scored twice against the Reds, reported to match referee Anthony Taylor that he had heard racist abuse from a supporter.

Taylor then stopped the match for a few minutes to speak with the coaches and captains of each team, who decided to continue the game.

After the incident, the 25-year-old Cherries’ star posted a message on Instagram thanking all the messages of support he had received.

The Premier League has also announced that it is opening an investigation.

Semenyo, who was born in Chelsea, England, joined Bournemouth from Bristol City in 2023 and has scored 22 goals so far for the Cherries.

The defending champions scrambled to register new recruits Marcus Rashford and goalkeeper Joan Garcia with La Liga, hours before their departure for Mallorca.

Several other Barca players are awaiting validation by Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional (LFP), including Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, Roony Bardghji, Gerard Martin and Hector Fort.

Raphinha handed Barca a dream start with a seventh minute effort, assisted by Lamine Yamal.

Ferran Torres put the visitors ahead by the 23rd minute, with Barca on the ascendancy.

By the 42nd minute, Mallorca had already conceded seven cards, including five yellow cards and two red cards, leading to the expulsion of Manu Morlanes in the 24th minute and Vedat Muriqi in the 39th, whose call was decided by VAR.

Back from the break, Barca struggled to put matters into their hands despite a two-man advantage, as they squandered countless clear-cut chances.

Yamal eventually hit home the third goal following an assist from Pedri, to help Barca seal a crucial 3-0 away win on matchday one.

Other results: Alaves 2-1 Levante, Valencia 1-1 Real Sociedad.

Upcoming matches: Sunday August 17: Celta Vigo – Getafe, Athletic Club – Sevilla, Espagnol – Atletico Madrid.

While opinions for the 2025 Ballon d’Or are sharply divided, with one side in support of PSG star Ousmane Dembélé and the other Lamine Yamal of Barcelona, Manchester United midfielder Casemiro has a different view.

In an interview with GQ, the Brazil international claims Liverpool’s Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah is a top favourite for the upcoming football’s most prestigious individual award.

“For me, right now, it’s Salah. He’s the best player because of his impact on the game. He scores a lot and makes a lot of assists,” Casemiro, 33, said.

Liverpool were eliminated from the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League in the round of 16 against PSG, which technically reduces the chances of Salah.

However, Casemiro argues that Salah had a great campaign last season and thus deserves a recognition.

“I think Liverpool didn’t win a trophy like the Champions League, for example, because they struggled in the second half of the season, but for me, the most complete player throughout the season was Salah,” Casemiro said.

The Ballon d’Or ceremony will be held in Paris on September 22.

Premier League side Tottenham have condemned a wave of racist harassment online against French striker Mathys Tel, for missing his penalty against PSG in the European Super Cup clash on Wednesday.

PSG eventually won the shootout 4-3 following a 2-2 draw at a fulltime, which sealed the UEFA Champions League winners’ status as double European champions.

Mathys, 20, who joined the club last winter, was violently attacked on social media, Spurs said in a statement posted on X.

“We are disgusted at the racial abuse that Mathys Tel has received on social media following last night’s UEFA Super Cup defeat.

“Mathys showed bravery and courage to step forward and take a penalty, yet those who abuse him are nothing but cowards – hiding behind anonymous usernames and profiles to spout their abhorrent views.”

Tottenham said they will work with the authorities and social media platforms “to take the strongest possible action against any individual we are able to identify.”

Real Madrid have announced their opposition to a plan to relocate La Liga clash between Villarreal and FC Barcelona to Miami next December.

The Spanish Football Federation have given green light for the game to be relocated to USA, precisely at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on December 20.

However, the body noted that it will forward the request to UEFA and FIFA.

Real Madrid, Barca’s archival, claim playing a domestic fixture abroad violates the Federation’s rules.

“The measure, implemented without prior information or consultation with the clubs participating in the competition, violates the essential principle of territorial reciprocity that governs double-round league competitions (one match at home and the other at the opposing team’s home ground), altering the competitive balance and granting an unfair sporting advantage to the requesting clubs,” Madrid said in a statement.

Los Blancos added that Barcelona would be at an advantage over Villarreal due to former Barca star, Lionel Messi’s popularity in Miami. Messi plies his trade at Inter Miami co-owned by England legend David Beckham.

Real Madrid said they had contacted FIFA, UEFA, and the Higher Sports Council to defend “the national and international regulations governing the organisation of official competitions.”

Fasfe, the Spanish Football Shareholders and Societies Federation, which brings together many supporters, has also expressed its “absolute, total and firm” opposition to the project.

It would be the first time for an official domestic league match to be held abroad.

Chelsea have agreed to donate part of the total prize money from their victory in the Fifa Club World Cup to the family of late Portuguese players Diogo Jota and André Silva.

The former Liverpool star and his brother were killed in a car accident in Spain on July 3.

Chelsea pocketed more than €98 million following their 3-0 victory over PSG in the Fifa Club World Cup final on July 13.

The players involved in the competition will share approximately €13.3 million. According to The Athletic, the decision was made jointly by the players and Chelsea management.

Liverpool, where Diego Jota played between 2020 and 2025, have retired his jersey number 20.

Liverpool players will wear a “Forever 20” badge on their shirts and jackets throughout the season, and all profits from the sale of shirts bearing this number will be donated to the club’s foundation.

Diogo’s brother André Silva, 25, was an attacking midfielder and winger at Portuguese side Boavista.

The two men died in a Lamborghini Huracán crash in the province of Zamora in Spain, while returning to Liverpool for pre-season training.
