Paris Saint Germain midfielder João Neves will not play a part in the UEFA Super Cup match between his side and Tottenham on Wednesday, August 13.
The Portuguese is facing a two-match suspension imposed by FIFA disciplinary committee following the player’s red card in their last official game.
Neves was sent off in the Fifa Club World Cup final between Chelsea and PSG (3-0), for pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair.
However, while the competition’s rules state that “any match suspension following a sending-off” is not carried over to another competition, the player was ultimately the subject of a disciplinary action by Fifa due to his outburst following the referee’s decision.
The suspension will also exclude him from PSG’s season-opening game against Nantes in Ligue 1 on August 17.
Neves, who joined the current European champions last summer from Benfica, is among the 30 contenders for the 2025 Ballon d’Or.
The UEFA Super Cup is an annual football match contested by the winners of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.
This year’s edition will take place in Udine, Italy, at Stadio Friuli, home of Serie A club Udinese.
